Clean Carpets – Grade 1, Page 1

Vacuuming, this is where it all starts. Carpet health and indoor air quality are both improved by vacuuming. Eighty five to ninety five percent of the soil in your carpet is dry particles that are easily removed by vacuuming. I recall years ago having my carpets cleaned by a professional carpet cleaner and he stressed… vacuum, vacuum, vacuum!

If you are like me vacuuming is not the first thing you think of when you get up on Saturday morning. A couple of things that helped me realize the importance of vacuuming were:

1) All the visible debris (dirt, sand, hair, lint) that we see on our hard floor surfaces is also hidden in the fibres of our carpets.
2) By getting into a vacuuming routine we will help our carpets last longer and improve our indoor air quality.

There have been some interesting studies on indoor air quality and carpeted homes. To most peoples surprise, these articles speak of the health benefits of carpeted living areas. If you are interested in these studies give me a call and I can get you some more information on them.

When people ask me what type of vacuum they should use I usually tell them to use the one they have. Make sure hoses are unobstructed and that bags, filters, or dirt cups are replaced and cleaned regularly. I am a fan of upright vacuums and have impressed clients with the dirt removing capabilities with some relatively basic models.

Get into a vacuuming routine and you will be your carpet’s best fan.
